Prisoner Employment Program (formerly Alaska Correctional Industries) Established at Fairbanks Correctional Center in the winter of 1989 and expanded into Hiland Mt. Correctional Center in May 1999, the garment industry was one of the original industries for ACI. The shop primarily produces flat goods and garments for adult correctional or other institutional clients across the state. The combined program trains close to 100 adult offenders a year in layout, cutting, sewing, quality control, packaging, shipping and receiving. The shop has 20 to 30 employees at any point in time. New opportunities include garments for sale to all correctional institutions, Alaska Psychiatric Institute and the Alaska Marine Highway.
